In a galaxy, far far away...

There was a storage administrator, whose life was perfect. He managed a multivendor storage environment, where all the operating systems natively provided hardware independent multipathing to those RAID replacements the RM.com bloggers designed in the earth year 2006. All the storage subsystems available on the market were supported on all operating systems, and all migrations from one vendor to the other could be scheduled and completed without host/application disruption. He never has to convince any server operator to upgrade the multipathing software or have him remove any vendors specific multipathing software, reboot, install a new vendors specific multipathing…

Microsoft's VSS and IBM's FlashCopy.

I just read this post on SANgod.com. I must admit, you have to have some balls to call yourself a god , but if it works for him..... But i had a deja-vu when reading it. We don't use EMC, but the issues we have with M$ VSS and FlashCopy are about the same. I did some integration of VSS to the IBM San Volume Controller, just to try it out. We use IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager for backup, but in fact, that doesn't even matter. Consider a M$ Windows Server 2003 host, booting…

SAN Storage in a DMZ, Part 2.

Remember my post on SAN storage in a DMZ? If not, check this link. Well, i haven't been wasting my time. I've done some research on this topic, but that didn't turn up much information. Maybe my research wasn't extensive enough . I've had some thoughts on the subject though. Like i said in my previous post, you have to be pretty good to modify the device drivers of a host after breaking in. You'd have to be even better when trying to modify any SAN component or setting…

Friday afternoon motivation

Damn, It is happening to me again. It's friday afternoon, just a few hours before the weekend starts. I still got a lot of work, and many new ideas are roaming through my head. But i just don't seem to find the right place to start. Shall i wait on the people preparing stuff for me, or will i pick up stuff that need to be done anyway? If i start something new now, i probably won't be able to finish it before end-of-workday. All this seems to have a negative influence on my…

Customer experience presentation

I am invited by one of our Business Partners to do a "customer experience" presentation. This is something new to me. I've done some technical demo's for a couple of peers. But these guys were also technical folks, so they understand most of slang you spill at them. Now however, i am asked to speek to IT managers, IT architects and the likes . I've never done a presentation for this kind of audience. I am quite excited en am looking forward to my new personal challenge.  I guess this is part…

SAN Storage in a DMZ. Ow boy.

In our shop the need arised for the internet facing infrastructure to be renewed. So we also planned on serving SAN storage to those servers. In the internet facing infrastructure, requires the highest possible security considerations. Like it does in all shops. I almost instantly started thinking about the security aspects of my SAN on the DMZ servers. What if someone was able to hack into one of those DMZ servers? What would he be able to do? Coul'd he furter hack into our shop through the SAN? I almost certainly know that he should be better than…

Simplicity is the key.

It's Friday afternoon where i live, and i took the afternoon off, to be with my wife. Surprise i said when i got home. I surprised only my dog. The kids are in school, and the wife is obviously gone somewhere. So i sit here, with my Senseo coffee, thinking about the discussion i had earlier this morning at work. I wanted to design some flashcopy scripts against our IBM San Volume Controller, in order to perform some flashcopy tasks for the Windows servers. In the forum i already started a new topic about this. So i talked…

My first entry. What's it about?

Wow. My first words in a public weblog. What should i write. Who want's to know what i have to say? What could i say? What should i say? All these kinds of questions rushed through my thoughts. Don't get me wrong, i am not new to online information and weblogs. But writing stuff that potentially everyone can read? This sure makes me shiver some times. What's that called? Stagefright? Funny actually, me being not so tactical in expressing my opinion. I sometimes get accused of being too blunt-manored. So why do i get nervous when writing these lines? It…
