Anarchist’s View on Thin Provisioning

Barry Burke posted today on the subject of thin provisioning and it's a pretty good read.  You can find it here .  He brings up some great points that everyone should think about if they are thinking about implementing thin provisioning.

Tony Asaro from ESG and I have been exchanging thoughts about thin provisioning that your readers might be interested in too.
You can get to most of it by dropping in on Tony’s Stor Wars Blog here:

It’s interesting that the storage blogs are all a-buzz with thin provisioning talk of late. I guess HDS legitimized TP with the USP V, but let’s not forget that the technology has been around for a while. If you read the reports from IT shops that have already had some experience with TP, it seems to be a big hit. I’m paraphrasing, but a comment that stood out to me was that once you’ve tried TP you will make sure that every array you buy in the future has it.

Strikes me that Barry’s post is pure marketing FUD, based on EMC’s lack of a response to the USP V. The comments Barry’s received would seem to support this.

Actually, EMC announced last week at EMC World that they will have TP on their DMX line coming in 2008.  Guess they won’t wait as long as they did with RAID 6.

Isn’t that the standard marketing response when asked about a missing feature that your competitor just introduced?

    Well yeah…

wall street tends to react unkindly when publicly-traded vendors announce product delivery targets and don’t deliver. as such, expect to see thin provisioning across EMC’s storage platforms in 2008 (Celerra has been equipped for TP since Q1 06, as we know).
regarding EMC’s response to the USPV, dunno if there is much more to say here. EMC is betting on the reliability inherent to internally managed storage. HDS is betting on the merits of externally managed storage. let’s meet here next year and have a look at the scoreboard (market share #s) to see which way customers are leaning…
